I was referred to Virginia Career Works through Carilion Clinic for the Pharmacy Technician Trainee Program and participated in an On-the-Job Training (OJT) program. Through this program, I received career coaching and support services, including a stipend for uniforms and assistance with gas mileage, which helped reduce the financial burden during training. This support made it possible for me to stay focused on her goals and successfully complete the program. As a result, I achieved my goal of becoming a certified pharmacy technician before my wedding, with the help of the Star City Program and Carilion.
Amanda Harper
Amanda was referred through DSS after struggling to maintain employment as a single mother of three toddlers, especially following a period of time out of work due to an injury involving her child. DSS encouraged her to take a resume course at the Higher Education Center, which introduced her to additional training and education opportunities, including CCMA. Through Virginia Career Works, she received support such as resume assistance, career guidance, and ongoing encouragement. Sylvie was consistently available to answer questions, provided timely responses, and offered a personable and supportive experience throughout the process. As a result, Amanda was able to secure employment that fits her schedule and family needs, with better pay and opportunities for advancement, transitioning from a job into a true career. Services like these make a real difference, and more people should know they are available for those who need support moving into meaningful employment.

I was introduced to the program through Sparkforce Camp at Salem City High School and accepted admission after learning about the opportunity. Through Virginia Career Works, I received support including help obtaining work boots that I will use when I begin part-time work with Graham White Manufacturing Company, and later transition to full-time employment after graduating high school. My career coach also helped me identify my career interests and better understand my options, which I had not fully explored before the camp. This experience helped me gain clarity on my career path and showed me what opportunities are available. I would recommend the program because it helps you get a job or start a career and provides a better understanding of the types of jobs out there.

With support from Virginia Career Works, I received career coaching, completed my OJT, and was provided supportive services like work boots. After finishing the program, I was hired full-time by Corell Electric. This experience helped me discover a new career path and secure stable employment. I work for the United States Forest Service and needed a Class A CDL, but my agency’s budget did not cover the training and I couldn’t afford it on my own. That led me to Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board and the Fast Forward program through Mountain Gateway Community College. Once I connected with the right people, the process was straightforward. The team was responsive, answered my questions, and kept me on track throughout the program. This partnership made it possible for me to complete the training and earn my Class A CDL, something that otherwise would not have been possible. I recommend MGCC and Greater Roanoke Works for anyone looking to further their education, training, and experience!

The Star City Works program has really been helpful for me during my career change process. They kept me on track and provided assistance while I left my job after 12 years to start a new journey in the nursing field. I was excited yet nervous about this move because my household would undergo a pay cut while I was in training. SCW helped during this challenging time by providing assistance with uniform needs, household bills, and groceries for my family of 5. Now that I’ve graduated, I feel more confident in myself when it comes to setting & achieving my goals. Thank you to everyone who played a part in my success.
Deloris St. Clair
Deloris was referred to the SCW/VCW programs by Carilion through their Pharmacy Technician Trainee Program. financial help and support was awesome, I do wish I had been able to talk to my Career Coach more often. 20 years prior I was a medical coder and biller, I had a small child and ended up working with a family business and left the job when the medical job moved out of the area. If it’s something you want to do, I’d definitely recommend the Carilion Program because it did get me set up and was able to get a job very easily! It was great, it affected me in being able to make more money than I was before and I’m in a better position. The Star City Program was great in helping with uniforms and mileage, I truly appreciate the support.

I would tell others to take full advantage of the help, support, resources, and grants being offered in the community because this is an opportunity that shouldn’t be turned down.

Six months ago, I was battling drug addiction and uncertainty about my future when I connected with Virginia Career Works. That moment gave me hope and introduced me to a new path forward. My career coach shared opportunities with me, especially the chance to earn my Class A CDL, and I was awarded a scholarship that covered classroom training, driving instruction, and my DOT physical. With that support, I completed the program and was hired by Western Express as a professional driver, and I’m now traveling the country, earning a great income and building a stable future.

I was paired with a career coach who supported me before and after the camp through a Work Experience (WEX), helping me access supportive services like work boots that were fully covered and that I can continue using in my job. I came to Virginia Career Works as a young person with no work experience, formal training, or clear career direction, looking for opportunities to build skills and start a career. I learned about the WIOA Youth program through the American Job Center in Roanoke and joined Tech Camp, where I gained hands-on experience in technology, worked with professionals, built my resume, practiced interviewing, and even built a Raspberry Pi. I then moved into a Virtual Reality Technician internship and later an On-the-Job Training (OJT) opportunity, with ongoing support from staff throughout each step. This experience ultimately helped me land a part-time job as a Computer Technician, gave me valuable industry connections, and helped me better understand my career path, giving me the opportunity to get my foot in the door and start working toward my dream career.

I was finishing my GED and starting to think about my future career when I was referred to the Virginia Career Works WIOA Title I Youth Program through West Piedmont Adult and Career Education in Franklin County. With no prior work experience but an interest in hospitality, my career coach helped me build my resume, explore opportunities, and connect with employers in the field. With their support, I secured a Work Experience as a Front Desk Clerk at The Liberty Trust and continued receiving On-the-Job Training to develop the skills needed for the role, which ultimately led to a full-time position as a Guest Service Agent, where I gained hands-on experience, built confidence, and started a meaningful career in hospitality.
Kai Armfield
I was referred to the program by TAP for the CCMA training cohort in July 2023. I was working part-time as a CNA but wanted to advance my education and earning potential with a new certification. In addition to receiving training funds and career coaching services, I also received supportive services to help pay my past-due rent and assist with transportation to training and work. I appreciated that my life coach went out of her way to check in and make sure I had what I needed to be successful. Without the program, I would not have been able to take the training course and advance in her career. I say that if you do not have a passion for healthcare and a heart to work with others, that you might want to find a different career path. I truly recommend Virginia Career Works to anyone who needs help to be successful.

I came to Virginia Career Works after my mom enrolled me in the YouthBuild program, and my career coach referred me to it to help me build social, life, and construction skills while figuring out my future. The staff at BSI, especially Shawn and Charles, supported me with hands-on training like using a nail gun, along with guidance to improve my confidence, teamwork, and communication skills, and I also gained experience through volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, which helped me grow both personally and professionally. The program helped me become more confident, make friends, and discover an interest in plumbing as a potential career path, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in construction because you gain real skills, valuable experience, and strong support while giving back to the community.

I heard about Virginia Career Works through a co-worker who shared how much the program helped her achieve her career goals, so I decided to give it a try. I’m very grateful I did because the staff were extremely supportive, took time to understand my goals, and were always available to help with any questions I had, and they assisted me in furthering my healthcare education by helping me enroll in a 68-hour medication aide class. Because of this opportunity, I am now on my way to becoming a registered medication aide, and once I pass my exam I will receive a pay increase at my current job, which has had a very positive impact on my life as I continue working toward completing my Registered Nursing degree.

I came to Virginia Career Works during a very difficult time in my life after experiencing homelessness due to domestic violence while trying to rebuild my life for myself and my children with very limited resources. I had previously tried to pursue training but couldn’t afford it or find the right support. Through my career coach, I was connected to a last-minute CNA training opportunity through TAP, and with support from WIOA and SCW I received funding for my class and assistance with essentials like my uniform, which allowed me to enroll and complete the program. This support completely changed my life by helping me earn my CNA certification in just five and a half weeks and secure full-time employment in my field.
